Hearing Aids
Hearing aids are advanced medical devices designed to improve hearing and enhance communication in everyday life. They come in a variety of styles, including discreet in-the-ear (ITE), completely-in-canal (CIC), receiver-in-canal (RIC), and behind-the-ear (BTE) models, each suited to different levels of hearing loss and personal preferences.
Modern hearing aids are available in various technology levels — from essential models that focus on clear speech in quiet settings, to premium devices equipped with features like automatic noise reduction, directional microphones, Bluetooth connectivity, rechargeability, and AI-powered sound adjustments that adapt to different listening environments. Whether you need a simple solution for one-on-one conversations or a sophisticated device to handle challenging, noisy environments, there’s a hearing aid to match your lifestyle and hearing needs.
Assistive Listening Devices and Hearing Aid Accessories
In addition to hearing aids, there are a range of assistive listening devices (ALDs) and accessories designed to enhance hearing in specific situations and provide greater convenience in daily life. These include wireless TV headphones and TV streamers that deliver clear sound directly to your ears, ensuring you enjoy your favourite shows without needing to increase the volume for others. Remote controls allow for easy adjustments of volume and settings without touching the hearing aids, while table microphones and multi-mics are ideal for improving speech clarity in group conversations or noisy environments, streaming voices directly to your hearing aids.
Whether it’s staying connected during meetings, enjoying television with family, or managing your hearing aids with ease, these devices provide practical solutions that support a fuller and more comfortable hearing experience.

At Milestone Hearing, we’re committed to helping you get the best performance from your hearing aids throughout their lifespan. All new hearing aids come with a 3-year manufacturer’s warranty, with the option to purchase an additional 1-year extended warranty for extra peace of mind.
Our clinic also provides in-house repairs and maintenance, which may include:
- Checking the overall health of your hearing aids (and earmoulds, if applicable)
- Professional cleaning and servicing
- Earmould re-tubing
- Wax filter replacement
- Receiver replacement (charges may apply if out of warranty)

Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know if I need a hearing aid?
If you’re finding it difficult to hear conversations, frequently increasing the volume on the TV, or struggling in noisy environments, it might be time for a hearing assessment. Our audiologists will guide you through the process and help determine if hearing aids are the right solution for you.
Can I trial a hearing aid before purchasing?
Yes. We offer a no-obligation 2-week hearing aid trial period. This allows you to experience how the devices perform in your daily life, ensuring you feel confident in your choice before making a commitment.
How long do hearing aids last?
With proper care and maintenance, most hearing aids last between 5 to 7 years. Over time, advancements in technology may also offer opportunities to upgrade to newer features; this entails purchasing a new set of aids.
Are hearing aids covered by private health insurance or government programs?
Many private health insurance plans offer rebates for hearing aids, depending on your level of cover. If you are a pensioner, DVA cardholder, or eligible through the Hearing Services Program (HSP), you may also receive government subsidies. We’re happy to assist you in checking your eligibility.
Hearing Services Program (HSP), am I eligible?
You are eligible for the voucher scheme if you are an Australian citizen or permanent resident or if you live on Norfolk Island, are aged 21 years or older, and are:
- a pensioner concession card holder or their spouse
- a Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA) Gold Card holder or their spouse
- a DVA White Card holder (hearing-specific conditions) or their spouse
- a member of the Australian Defence Force, including the:
- Permanent Navy
- Regular Army
- Permanent Air Force
- Reserves in continuous full-time service
- referred by a Disability Employment Service.
**A Commonwealth Seniors Health Card does not provide eligibility for the program**
What’s the difference between rechargeable and battery-operated hearing aids?
Rechargeable hearing aids offer the convenience of not having to replace small batteries and are easily charged overnight. Battery-operated models require disposable batteries but are often smaller in size. We can help you choose the option that best fits your lifestyle.
Do hearing aids work with smartphones and other devices?
Many modern hearing aids are Bluetooth-enabled, allowing you to stream phone calls, music, and TV audio directly to your ears. They can also be controlled via smartphone apps for adjusting volume and settings on the go.
Note: Hearing aids do not connect directly to the TV via Bluetooth. A TV streamer is required for the connection; this is purchased separately.
How often do hearing aids need servicing?
Regular maintenance, including cleaning and minor servicing, is recommended every 6 to 12 months. We provide in-clinic servicing and check-ups to keep your hearing aids performing at their best.
Can I bring in my existing hearing aids for adjustments?
Absolutely. Even if your hearing aids weren’t purchased from us, we’d love to help with adjustments, repairs, or servicing.
(Additional fees may apply.)
Just a heads-up:
- If you have a Maintenance Agreement with another provider, please reach out to them first – we respect those arrangements.
- If your hearing aids came through the Hearing Services Program (HSP), we can only assist if you choose to transfer your care to us.
Are hearing aids discreet? Will people notice I’m wearing one?
Hearing aids come in a variety of styles, including virtually invisible options that sit deep in the ear canal. We’ll guide you through the available choices to find a device that suits your cosmetic preferences and hearing needs.
Do I need a referral to see you?
No referral is necessary. You can book an appointment with us directly for a hearing assessment or hearing solutions discussion.
What are assistive listening devices (ALDs)?
Assistive listening devices are products designed to help people hear better in specific situations where hearing aids alone might not be enough — such as watching TV, participating in group conversations, or using phones. They work by enhancing sound clarity and reducing background noise.
Do I need a hearing aid to use these devices?
Some devices, like wireless TV headphones, can be used without hearing aids. However, many accessories, such as TV streamers and remote microphones, are designed to work alongside your hearing aids for an even better hearing experience.
What is a TV streamer and how does it work?
A TV streamer connects to your television and transmits the audio directly to your hearing aids. This provides clear, high-quality sound without needing to increase the volume on the TV, making it more comfortable for everyone in the room.
Can I control my hearing aids without touching them?
Yes. Remote control accessories allow you to adjust the volume, change programs, or mute your hearing aids discreetly and easily, without needing to press tiny buttons on the device itself.
What are remote microphones and table mics used for?
Remote microphones and table mics are designed to pick up speech from specific directions and stream it directly to your hearing aids. They are especially helpful in noisy environments, group conversations, business meetings, or lectures, where background noise can make hearing difficult.
Are these accessories compatible with all hearing aids?
Compatibility depends on the brand and model of your hearing aids. We can assist you in selecting accessories that are compatible with your specific devices to ensure seamless integration and performance.
Will my private health insurance or government programs cover these devices?
Some assistive devices may be eligible for rebates or subsidies through private health insurance or government programs like the Hearing Services Program (HSP). We can help check your eligibility and provide quotes.
Can I try these devices before purchasing?
Yes, in many cases, we offer trial opportunities for devices such as TV streamers or remote microphones, allowing you to experience how they work before making a decision.
